If you came to this post, there's a big chance you know me from the Instagram mom community. What you might not know is that I have been studying social media and the power of online presence for almost ten years now, and today I'm sharing some of my latest discoveries that I think are going to give you a lot of insight about the future of social media for us.
I've been listening to a podcast called Hashtag Authentic by Sara Tasker (me_and_orla on Instagram), where she invited Nik Speller to talk about the future for social influencers. Among the many things they chatted about, they addressed something I had been noticing on Instagram for a while: content fatigue. If you've been using Instagram as a business, you may have noticed that the algorithm lately has been completely different and unpredictable. A lot of changes have been happening, and one of the reasons it's becoming more challenging to keep your online presence growing is because the market has become incredibly competitive. You will see people creating authentic content, and getting great visibility and you will also see people replicating that same content. Now, if you think the new algorithm is against your awesome and authentic content, I will tell you, you are wrong. Why? Because Instagram sees that there are thousands of accounts replicating photos, captions and a whole lifestyle. What the app is trying to do is simply challenge real creatives to come up with new ways to expand their content. Think about it, if everyone has the same chance of growth, those who are simply replicating good content would appear in the newsfeed and get the same visibility as you! But you are the one who is working hard to create incredible stories. It just wouldn't be fair.
I joined an Instagram course called The Instagram Lab with Jenna Kutcher in 2017. Jenna has given us incredible insights about everything online and one of the things she shared recently in her podcast is that the new algorithm allows your content to be shown to only 6% of your audience. In the past, at least 30% of your active audience would see your photo pop in their newsfeed. What a difference! Social Media has changed and there's a new course for it becoming more real everyday and it's time to adjust to the new demand if you enjoy doing collaborations, sponsored posts and connecting with your public.
How? Stick with me and I will give you all the details:
Jenna agrees that the future for us influencers is e-mail list. Or in other words: newsletter. After doing a lot of research I came to the conclusion that there's an online cycle for the real influencer, which includes unifying content through several different platforms. To make it simple: being "just" an Instagram influencer won't be enough in a couple of years. Jenna strongly believes that your voice has a power that can connect people with their dreams and empower others to pursue their passions. I agree with that wholeheartedly. When only 6% of your audience is seeing your content, you must find a way to still connect with these people and bring your awesome content to their screens. Which means you should look into expanding your passion to newsletters crafting and other online spaces as well. You can reach the start of that path with blog subscriptions, or if you don't have a blog, you can simply use an external app to create newsletters to your fans.
You're probably thinking: I barely have time as a mom to create content for Instagram, I can't imagine coming up with content for a newsletter! Well, I promise you, the effort you're putting into your influencing business won't change that much. That's my belief at least! Let's say you have been talking about a nursery reveal on your Instagram page, and giving tips on how to keep that room minimal and intentional. Creating a newsletter would mean you would simply share that same exact content with your followers by e-mail. Though with a call to action at the end, or perhaps a background story for that reveal. You will get people excited to read your blog and they will follow whichever link you share and see you created a cycle. A very basic cycle in my eyes would have to look like this: Maybe a sneak peek on Instagram - A newsletter connecting with your fans and helping them feel like they are a real part of your life - A full blog post with information they've been anxiously waiting for - those same photos pinned to one of your Pinterest boards, one which has only YOUR creations.
Why is it so important to use Pinterest in your future as an influencer? Melyssa Griffin has been teaching thousands of people about the power of Pinterest in her online class called Pinfinite Growth. I have read Melyssa's e-mails and blog posts for quite a few years and I believe her message. I wouldn't go anywhere else if I wanted to understand more about generating traffic through Pinterest. She says that having a Pinterest page that has an organized content will increase your traffic and consequently generate money. Her suggestion is that your first six boards should have only your content, so when someone visits your page the first thing they see is what you create and share on the web. I will be more conservative and say the first nine boards should follow that same strategy. When you are active on all of these different platforms and take your audience through that cycle, here's what you creates: a stable home for your content on the internet. A safe place for it. Even though you might still get some copy cats, the power of your online presence will stay ahead and we all know copy cats fall behind. They just can't make it you guys!
Someone who's already doing all of that and is doing A-MA-ZING is a girl I love called Beth Kirby (local_milk on Instagram). That lady sees this new rhythm the internet created and she's following it and blowing me away! I subscribed to her blog a few weeks ago and was excited to see she had been following Jenna's advice and is now working closely with her. Beth is a perfect example of an influencer who's using different platforms to share her content with the world. She doesn't know me, but her message is so clear that I feel like she's talking to me directly whenever I open an email from her. She simply talks to her audience, she studies the women who follow her, she knows their dreams and she empowers them to accomplish them.
If you are a mom who is working as an influencer on Instagram and is a little overwhelmed with all of this information, I just want to tell you that you can do this! And you don't have to do it all at once, so take your time girlfriend. It's taken me almost three years to get to where I am. I have an Etsy shop that makes sales everyday because of Pinterest, my blog has 100 subscriptions to date, and I gained close to 10k followers on Instagram completely organically in less than an year. I make steady income with collaborations and have a few agents working with me and landing us both amazing collaboration opportunities. And I'm still simply taking my time. Because my kids are my priority, my online presence comes after God and my family.
In the next few weeks I'll be talking about: Easy ways to build your online cycle, Starting your Newsletter + plug-ins and apps, How to monetize your blog, How to use Pinterest to grow your audience, The importance of knowing SEO as an influencer, The power of online mom community and finally how to do all of that without stealing your kids' childhood. It is possible! Don't frown at me, I'm here typing this to you because it is possible! Both of my kids are napping hard, my kitchen is clean and I have dinner prepared. I also have a crazy dream to bring moms together to create a powerful online presence that can bring big blessings to their lives. I'm talking about passive income and also the ability to help our spouses carry the burden of keeping our family alive. I want to teach other women that want to stay home with their children, but can't afford living in a one income household, or that just wish to use their creativity to keep their sanity (me!). I know you, I know your dreams and I want to help you! So stick with me as I share these new blog series with you. If you have any insight or questions to share, please comment below.
